HISTORY

During the period from 1782 to 1786, the master Antônio Francisco Lisboa, Aleijadinho, dedicated himself to the construction of the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, belonging to the Jaguara Farm. This is considered the only complete work performed by the master - architectural design and decoration.

WHY THIS PLACE

In the 19th century, the farm was acquired by the Englishman George Chalmers, who held the position of superintendent of the Saint John Del Rey Mining Company, owner of the Morro Velho Mine, in Nova Lima. As Chalmers was an Anglican, he was not interested in construction, but he was sensitive enough to preserve all the decorative works by donating them to the Mother Church of Nova Lima, who realized that the works would be lost if they continued in the abandoned chapel of the farm. Without any maintenance and interest in preserving the heritage, the church began to fall, since its ceiling had been removed.

CURIOSITIES

The ruins of the church are supported by ironwork, as what was still left of the façade threatened to collapse. Fazenda da Jaguara is now a farm hotel.
